Google's free tool for monitoring website performance in search, submitting sitemaps, and identifying indexing issues.
Google Search Console (GSC) is Google's free site monitoring tool for owners and developers. It surfaces the data Google itself collects about your site in search — actual impressions, clicks, click-through rates, and average positions per query and per page — plus indexing status, sitemap submission, Core Web Vitals, mobile usability, security issues, and manual actions.
Unlike third-party SEO tools that estimate rankings from sample queries, GSC reports the real numbers Google measures. It also exposes the URL Inspection tool, which lets you check exactly how Google sees a specific URL — last crawl date, canonical, indexed-or-not, structured data parsed, rendered HTML — invaluable for diagnosing why a page isn't ranking or appearing in search.
Verification is required: prove site ownership via DNS record, HTML file, HTML tag, Google Analytics, or Google Tag Manager. Domain-property verification (DNS) is preferred because it covers all subdomains and protocols (http/https/www/non-www) in a single property. Once verified, GSC starts collecting data immediately and shows ~16 months of history.
Using GSC to identify which glossary terms are getting impressions but low clicks, then improving their title tags and meta descriptions.
